Winter can be rough on your home, especially when you’re not sure how to prepare it for the change of seasons. At Larry & Sons, we want to help you keep your home safe and working well all winter long. We can also help make sure that you stay nice and warm.
If you’re new to the area or not sure how to prepare your home for winter, here are a few of our favorite tips:
- Patch any leaks. You may not notice air leaking in around your windows and doors over the summer, but you will definitely notice it in the winter. As things cool down, you may even feel a small breeze as cold air rushes into your home. This can be expensive, as your heating system will have to run longer to combat cold air that enters this way. There are all sorts of DIY sealants available that can fill these cracks and save you money.
- Tune up your furnace. When your furnace isn’t working at maximum efficiency, you will pay more for a colder house. Having a professional come out and look at your furnace and perform various standard maintenance tasks will help you stay warm all winter long.
- Close the damper on your fireplace. This is another sneaky way that cold air can enter your home. If you use your fireplace to warm your home, close unnecessary doors when it is running, to help hold heat in your house.
- Take care of the plumbing. Frozen pipes can be a big disaster. Avoid them by blowing out any sprinkler systems, disconnecting hoses and other things from outdoor faucets, and draining the faucets themselves. Store your hoses inside, to further protect them from the colder weather. If your indoor pipes tend to freeze, consider wrapping them in heat tape to protect them. Make sure that everyone knows how to turn off the main water supply to the house, just in case something happens.
- Cover your A/C. If your air conditioner is permanent and sits outside, think about getting a cover for it. This may seem frivolous, but it can actually protect the unit from damage and debris that can come with colder weather. Clean your unit first, so it will be ready to run when spring comes. Once you cover it, be sure that no one turns it on. That could cause a major problem!
It usually doesn’t take more than a few hours to get your home ready for winter, once you know what needs to be done. A little bit of effort goes a long way when you save money, stay warmer, and don’t have to worry about your house all winter long.
