- Tune up your furnace. When your furnace isn’t working at maximum efficiency, you will pay more for a colder house. Having a professional come out and look at your furnace and perform various standard maintenance tasks will help you stay warm all winter long.
- Close the damper on your fireplace. This is another sneaky way that cold air can enter your home. If you use your fireplace to warm your home, close unnecessary doors when it is running, to help hold heat in your house.
- Take care of the plumbing. Frozen pipes can be a big disaster. Avoid them by blowing out any sprinkler systems, disconnecting hoses and other things from outdoor faucets, and draining the faucets themselves. Store your hoses inside, to further protect them from the colder weather. If your indoor pipes tend to freeze, consider wrapping them in heat tape to protect them. Make sure that everyone knows how to turn off the main water supply to the house, just in case something happens.
- Cover your A/C. If your air conditioner is permanent and sits outside, think about getting a cover for it. This may seem frivolous, but it can actually protect the unit from damage and debris that can come with colder weather. Clean your unit first, so it will be ready to run when spring comes. Once you cover it, be sure that no one turns it on. That could cause a major problem!
