The days are getting longer, and while we’ve still had some pretty chilly days lately here in Hagerstown, summer will be here before we know it. You probably haven’t given your air conditioner a whole lot of thought in the past few months, but unless you want an unpleasant surprise on the first really hot day of the season, you may want to start thinking about getting your AC ready for summer now. Avoid needing AC repairs down the road by following these quick steps!
Replace Your Filters
Replacing your filters is a pretty standard part of maintaining your air conditioner. Ideally, you should be checking all of the filters in your HVAC system monthly, but they definitely need to be replaced or cleaned before summer. This could cause the cooling coil to ice up and prevent your system from adequately cooling your home. Click here to order new filters.
Examine the Exterior Condenser
During the cooler months, dirt and debris can build up around your exterior condenser. Make sure there is at least two feet of clear space around the unit. Also, use your garden hose to ensure that the condenser itself is free from leaves and debris.
Check Your Ductwork
Examine the ductwork inside your home, and make sure that floor registers are not blocked by furniture or rugs. Open registers to ensure that there is nothing inside. Take a close look at the ductwork to make sure all the connections and seams are intact and secure. If you discover any holes that need to be repaired, use silver aluminum tape.
Remove Debris from the Outside Unit
Use one of these nice sunny days to go outside and clean up around your air conditioner’s outside unit. Known as the condenser, this vital part of your cooling system nears proper airflow. And it can’t get that if there is a bunch of debris gathered around it. Clear at least two feet of space on all sides of the condenser. Remove toys, shrubs, branches, wood piles, etc. Rake away leaves as well to prevent them from getting sucked into the system. You may also want to use the condenser down with your garden hose to remove dirt, pollen and leaves. This helps ensure that your cooling system will run at peak efficiency.
Schedule an AC Tune-Up
Just like your car needs basic maintenance to run like it should, your AC needs some TLC to keep it operating at peak efficiency. We recommend having your air conditioner tuned up by a professional annually. In addition to ensuring maximum efficiency, tune-ups prevent premature system failure and can help you avoid costly repairs.
